History. The River Niger, Africa's third-longest river after the Nile and Congo, gave rise to the name Niger State.The state is known officially as the "Power State" since it is home to three of Nigeria's main hydroelectric power plants, namely Kainji, Jebba, and Shiroro stations. These three work together to generate over 2000 MW of electricity for the nation's largest cities.
